A two-week South Island motorhome trip from Christchurch can work very well, but the key is being realistic. With 14 days, it is better to choose a focused route than try to cover every major South Island destination.

This itinerary is designed for travellers who want a proper taste of the South Island without spending every day rushing between stops. It includes some of the classic highlights from Christchurch, while still allowing time for a proper handover, groceries, campground check-ins and slower motorhome travel.

If you have more time available, a three-week South Island itinerary will usually feel more relaxed. But if two weeks is what you have, this route is a sensible place to start.

Who this itinerary suits

This route suits couples, families and overseas travellers who want to experience the South Island within a shorter timeframe.

It is best for travellers who are happy to focus on the Mackenzie Country, Mount Cook, Queenstown, Wanaka and a relaxed return toward Christchurch, rather than trying to include the West Coast, Nelson, Kaikōura and the deep south all in the same trip.

Two weeks gives you enough time for a memorable holiday, but it does require choices.

Day 1: Pickup and first night near Christchurch

After pickup and handover in Christchurch, keep your first day simple. A motorhome handover takes longer than a normal car rental pickup because you need to understand the power, water, heating, fridge, gas, toilet, shower, waste water and other systems before heading away.

We recommend staying your first night reasonably close to Christchurch or choosing an easy first drive. This gives you time to buy groceries, unpack, settle into the vehicle and get comfortable before starting the main part of your South Island trip.

Days 2–3: Lake Tekapo

Lake Tekapo is one of the best first major stops from Christchurch. The drive is manageable, the scenery is beautiful, and it gives you a strong start to your South Island road trip.

Spend time around the lake, visit the Church of the Good Shepherd, enjoy the hot pools, or simply slow down and enjoy the Mackenzie Country. If the weather is clear, Tekapo is also known for its night sky and stargazing.

For a two-week itinerary, two nights in Tekapo gives you a good balance between enjoying the area and keeping the trip moving.

Days 4–5: Mount Cook / Aoraki

From Tekapo, continue toward Mount Cook. The drive along Lake Pukaki is one of the most scenic parts of the South Island and is worth taking slowly.

Mount Cook is a place where weather matters, so two nights is ideal if your schedule allows. This gives you a better chance of clear views and time for walks or viewpoints.

Popular options include the Hooker Valley Track, Tasman Glacier viewpoints, short walks near the village, and photo stops around Lake Pukaki.

Days 6–8: Queenstown

From Mount Cook, travel south through the Mackenzie Basin and Central Otago toward Queenstown.

Queenstown is one of the busiest and most popular stops in the South Island, so it is worth allowing a few nights. You might explore the lakefront, visit Arrowtown, take the gondola, drive toward Glenorchy, enjoy a meal out, or simply pause for a slower day.

In peak season, booking campsites ahead is a good idea.

Days 9–10: Wanaka

Wanaka is a great follow-up to Queenstown because it feels more relaxed while still offering beautiful lake and mountain scenery.

Spend time walking by the lake, visiting cafés, relaxing at your campground, or exploring nearby viewpoints. Wanaka is also a useful place to restock before continuing the loop back toward Christchurch.

Many travellers wish they had more time here, so avoid making Wanaka just a quick stop if you can.

Days 11–12: Central Otago or Mackenzie Country

From Wanaka, start working your way back toward Christchurch. A slower return through Central Otago, Omarama, Twizel or the Mackenzie Country gives you a chance to enjoy the landscape without making the final days feel rushed.

This part of the route can be adjusted depending on weather, campground availability and your pace. You may choose to spend extra time near Lake Pukaki, return through Tekapo, or stay somewhere quieter on the way back.

Day 13: Return closer to Christchurch

For your final night, it is usually best to stay reasonably close to Christchurch. This makes return day much easier and gives you time to refuel, empty waste tanks, pack properly and return the motorhome without stress.

Avoid planning a long drive on your final morning, especially if you have a flight or onward travel booked.

Day 14: Return the motorhome

Return the motorhome to our Christchurch base at the agreed time. If you are flying out after your hire, SpringLight can usually drop you back to Christchurch Airport after return, depending on timing.

Allow time for the return process so the end of your trip feels calm rather than rushed.

What this two-week route does not include

A two-week South Island trip works best when you do not try to include everything.

This route does not properly include the West Coast, Abel Tasman, Nelson, Kaikōura, the Catlins, Dunedin or a relaxed Milford Sound visit. You may be able to squeeze in one of these areas, but doing so usually means more driving and less time to enjoy each stop.

If you want Tekapo, Mount Cook, Queenstown, Wanaka, Milford Sound, the West Coast, Nelson and Kaikōura, a longer hire will give you a much better trip.

Is two weeks enough?

Two weeks is enough for a focused South Island motorhome holiday, but it is not enough to see everything comfortably.

If your dates are fixed, choose a realistic route and enjoy it properly. If you have flexibility, three weeks or more will usually make the trip feel much more relaxed.

If you have more time, our 3 week South Island motorhome itinerary gives you a more relaxed route with room for the West Coast.
