Flying into Christchurch is one of the easiest ways to start a South Island motorhome holiday. Christchurch Airport is close to the city, close to our pickup base, and well placed for heading toward Lake Tekapo, Mount Cook, Queenstown, Wanaka, the West Coast, Kaikōura or Nelson.
SpringLight Motorhomes offers free Christchurch Airport pickup, making it easier to start your trip without needing to arrange a taxi, shuttle or rental car just to collect your motorhome.
How our Christchurch Airport pickup works
If you need airport pickup, simply select free Christchurch Airport pickup when booking your motorhome.
We will collect you from Christchurch Airport, then bring you back to our Christchurch base. Your full motorhome handover is completed at our base, not at the airport.
This gives us the space and time to show you through the vehicle properly before you start your trip.
Why the handover is done at our base
A motorhome handover is more detailed than a normal car rental pickup.
Before you leave, we show you how the key systems work. This usually includes power, water, heating, fridge, gas, toilet, shower, grey water, awning if fitted, and general driving tips.
Doing this at our base means you can take your time, ask questions, check the vehicle properly, and leave feeling confident.
Allow time after your flight
If you are arriving on an international or connecting flight, allow enough time for luggage, customs, airport pickup and your handover.
We recommend not planning a long drive on your first day. After a flight, it is usually better to collect the motorhome, complete the handover, buy groceries, and stay your first night reasonably close to Christchurch.
This makes the start of your trip much more relaxed.
A good first night after pickup
For your first night, we usually recommend booking a campground or holiday park rather than trying to freedom camp straight away.
A powered site gives you time to settle in, unpack, get familiar with the motorhome, and ask any follow-up questions before heading further into the South Island.
Once you are comfortable with the vehicle, you can be more flexible with where you stay.
Starting your South Island trip from Christchurch
Christchurch is a great starting point for a South Island motorhome trip.
From our base, many travellers head inland toward Lake Tekapo and Mount Cook, south toward Queenstown and Wanaka, north toward Kaikōura and Nelson, or west toward Arthur’s Pass and the West Coast.
If you are still planning your route, it is worth allowing more time than the map suggests. New Zealand roads often take longer than expected, especially in a motorhome.

Returning after your trip
At the end of your hire, the motorhome is returned to our Christchurch base at the agreed time.
If you are flying out after returning the motorhome, we can usually drop you back to Christchurch Airport afterwards, depending on timing. Let us know your flight details or onward travel plans so we can confirm what works best.
