A two-month New Zealand motorhome trip from Christchurch gives you time to travel properly. Instead of rushing through a short list of highlights, you can slow down, follow the weather, stay longer in favourite places and enjoy the freedom that makes motorhome travel so special.

This itinerary is designed for travellers who want a relaxed New Zealand road trip with a strong South Island focus and the option to add selected North Island highlights. It is a flexible route idea, not a strict day-by-day plan.

SpringLight Motorhomes is based in Christchurch, making us a great starting point for longer South Island adventures and extended New Zealand motorhome hire.

Who this two-month itinerary suits

A two-month New Zealand motorhome itinerary suits travellers who want more than a quick holiday. It works well for international visitors, retired travellers, sabbatical travellers, families taking extended time away, or anyone wanting to explore New Zealand at a slower pace.

With two months, you can travel the South Island properly, include quieter places that shorter trips often miss, and still have time to add parts of the North Island if that suits your plans.

This length of hire also gives you flexibility around weather, road conditions, rest days and campground availability.

Why start from Christchurch?

Christchurch is one of the best places to start a New Zealand motorhome trip, especially if your main focus is the South Island.

From Christchurch, you can head inland toward Lake Tekapo, Lake Pukaki and Mount Cook, south toward Queenstown and Wanaka, west toward Arthur’s Pass and the West Coast, or north toward Kaikōura, Nelson and Abel Tasman.

Starting in Christchurch also makes it easy to build a proper South Island loop before deciding whether to continue to the North Island.

If you are flying into Christchurch, you can select free Christchurch Airport pickup when booking. We’ll bring you back to our base for your full vehicle handover before you head away.

Days 1–3: Christchurch pickup and a gentle start

After pickup and handover in Christchurch, keep the first few days simple. A motorhome handover takes longer than a normal car rental pickup because you need to understand how the vehicle works before heading away.

We show you the key systems, including power, water, heating, fridge, gas, toilet, shower, waste water, awning if fitted, and general driving tips.

Use the first day to collect the motorhome, buy groceries, unpack and stay somewhere easy. A relaxed start helps the rest of the trip feel much smoother.

Days 4–9: Lake Tekapo, Lake Pukaki and Mount Cook

The Mackenzie Country is a beautiful way to begin a longer New Zealand motorhome trip.

Spend time around Lake Tekapo, Lake Pukaki and Mount Cook. With two months, there is no need to rush through this area. You can wait for good weather, enjoy short walks, visit viewpoints and stay longer if the scenery suits your pace.

Highlights may include the Church of the Good Shepherd, Tekapo hot pools, stargazing, Lake Pukaki viewpoints, the Hooker Valley Track, Tasman Glacier viewpoints and short walks around Mount Cook village.

This area is one of the best examples of why longer motorhome hire works so well. The journey between places is part of the experience.

Days 10–15: Central Otago, Queenstown and Glenorchy

From the Mackenzie Country, travel south through Central Otago toward Queenstown.

With two months, you can take your time through places like Omarama, Cromwell, Clyde, Alexandra and Arrowtown rather than driving straight through.

Queenstown is one of the busiest stops in the South Island, but it is worth allowing several nights. You might explore the lakefront, take the gondola, visit Arrowtown, enjoy a meal out, or drive toward Glenorchy.

Glenorchy is a beautiful side trip and is much better when you have time to enjoy it properly.

Days 16–21: Te Anau, Milford Sound and Fiordland

Te Anau is the best base for visiting Milford Sound and exploring Fiordland.

Milford Sound is one of New Zealand’s most famous destinations, but it needs time. Weather and road conditions can affect plans, so building in flexibility is useful.

You can drive the Milford Road yourself if conditions suit, or choose a coach and cruise option if you prefer a more relaxed day.

With a longer hire, you can also spend time around Te Anau, Lake Manapouri, local walks and quieter Fiordland stops rather than treating the area as a one-day detour.

Days 22–27: The Catlins, Invercargill and Dunedin

From Fiordland or Southland, continue toward the Catlins and the lower South Island.

The Catlins are often missed on shorter South Island trips, but they fit very well into a two-month itinerary. This area offers rugged coast, waterfalls, wildlife, beaches, quiet roads and a slower style of travel.

You may also include Invercargill, Bluff or parts of the southern coast depending on your interests.

Dunedin is a useful stop for supplies, history, wildlife, the Otago Peninsula and a change of pace after quieter coastal areas.

Days 28–34: Wanaka, Hawea and the lakes

After the deep south, work your way back toward Wanaka and the lakes.

Wanaka is a great place to pause for several nights. You can walk by the lake, visit cafés, restock supplies, enjoy viewpoints and take a break from moving every day.

With two months, you can also spend time around Lake Hawea, Cardrona, Cromwell or quieter lakeside areas depending on your route.

This is a good part of the trip to slow down, reset and enjoy having more time than a standard holiday allows.

Days 35–42: Haast Pass and the West Coast

From Wanaka, travel over the Haast Pass to the West Coast.

The West Coast is best enjoyed with flexibility. Weather can change quickly, but rainforest, waterfalls, wild beaches, glaciers and coastal scenery are all part of the experience.

Good stops may include Haast, Fox Glacier, Franz Josef, Okarito, Hokitika, Greymouth and Punakaiki.

With two months, you can take extra nights where the weather is good, avoid long driving days and spend more time in the places that suit your style.

Days 43–49: Nelson, Abel Tasman and Golden Bay

From the West Coast, continue toward Nelson, Abel Tasman and possibly Golden Bay.

This part of the South Island has a different feel, with beaches, warmer weather, coastal walks, kayaking options, cafés, markets and a relaxed holiday pace.

Abel Tasman is worth several nights if you enjoy beaches, walking or kayaking. Golden Bay can also be included if you want a quieter and more remote-feeling extension.

This is one of the areas that longer motorhome hires make much easier to include properly.

Days 50–53: Kaikōura, Hanmer Springs or return toward Christchurch

From Nelson, begin working your way back toward Christchurch.

Kaikōura is a good coastal option with wildlife, sea views and seafood. Hanmer Springs is a good inland option with hot pools, forest walks and a relaxed final South Island stop.

If you are planning to finish your trip in Christchurch, this is a good stage to slow down and avoid leaving too much driving for the final day.

If you are continuing to the North Island, this is the time to work your way toward Picton and plan your ferry crossing.

Optional North Island extension

With a two-month New Zealand motorhome itinerary, some travellers choose to spend the full time in the South Island. Others prefer to add a shorter North Island section.

If you decide to cross to the North Island, allow time for the ferry, booking requirements, travel days and your return plans. The North Island can add a lot to the trip, but it is still important not to rush.

Possible North Island highlights include Wellington, the Kapiti Coast, Taupō, Rotorua, Tongariro National Park, Hawke’s Bay, Coromandel or Auckland depending on your interests and timing.

For a two-month trip, we would usually suggest keeping the North Island section focused rather than trying to see everything.

Ferry planning for longer motorhome trips

If you plan to travel between the South Island and North Island, you will need to allow for a Cook Strait ferry crossing between Picton and Wellington.

Motorhomes need to be booked correctly for size, and popular sailings can fill during busy travel periods. It is worth planning the ferry in advance, especially if you are travelling in peak season.

Your route should also allow some flexibility around weather, delays and timing. Avoid booking a ferry too tightly against a long driving day if you can.

Why two months works well

Two months gives you the freedom to experience New Zealand in a much more relaxed way.

You can spend proper time in the South Island, include quieter places, wait for better weather, add rest days, and still consider selected North Island highlights if they fit your plans.

This length of hire lets the motorhome become more than transport. It becomes your temporary home for the journey.
