A four-week South Island motorhome trip from Christchurch gives you enough time to travel beyond the standard highlights and enjoy the journey at a more relaxed pace.
With four weeks, you can include the Mackenzie Country, Mount Cook, Queenstown, Milford Sound, Wanaka, the West Coast, Nelson, Abel Tasman, Kaikōura and a comfortable return to Christchurch without making every day feel rushed.
This itinerary is a flexible route idea, not a strict day-by-day schedule. Weather, campground availability, road conditions and personal pace can all affect the best plan for your trip.
Who this itinerary suits
A four-week South Island itinerary suits travellers who want more than a quick highlights loop.
It works well for couples, families, retired travellers, international visitors and anyone wanting time to slow down, stay longer in favourite places and add scenic detours along the way.
If this is your main New Zealand motorhome holiday, four weeks gives you a much better chance to enjoy the South Island properly.
Days 1–2: Christchurch pickup and first night
After pickup and handover in Christchurch, keep the first day simple. A motorhome handover takes time because you need to understand the power, water, heating, fridge, gas, toilet, shower, grey water and other systems before heading away.
We recommend staying your first night reasonably close to Christchurch or choosing an easy first drive. This gives you time to buy groceries, unpack, settle in and get comfortable with the motorhome.
Starting slowly makes the rest of the trip much easier.
Days 3–5: Lake Tekapo and the Mackenzie Country
Lake Tekapo is a great first major stop after leaving Christchurch.
Spend time around the lake, visit the Church of the Good Shepherd, enjoy the hot pools, explore short walks and take in the Mackenzie Country scenery. If the weather is clear, Tekapo is also known for its night sky and stargazing.
With four weeks, you do not need to rush this part of the trip. Two or three nights in the area can be well worth it.
Days 6–8: Mount Cook / Aoraki and Lake Pukaki
From Tekapo, continue toward Mount Cook. The drive along Lake Pukaki is one of the most scenic parts of the South Island, so allow time for stops.
Mount Cook is worth more than a quick visit. Staying a couple of nights gives you a better chance of good weather and time for walks such as the Hooker Valley Track, Tasman Glacier viewpoints or shorter walks around the village.
This area is one of the strongest reasons to travel by motorhome, because the scenery is part of the journey.
Days 9–12: Queenstown and Glenorchy
From Mount Cook, head south through Central Otago toward Queenstown.
Queenstown is one of the busiest places in the South Island, but with four weeks you can stay long enough to enjoy it properly. You might visit Arrowtown, take the gondola, explore the lakefront, enjoy a meal out, or drive toward Glenorchy.
Glenorchy is a beautiful side trip and worth allowing time for if the weather is good.
In peak season, book campsites in this area ahead.
Days 13–15: Te Anau and Milford Sound
Milford Sound is one of New Zealand’s most famous destinations, but it needs time.
Te Anau is the best base for visiting Milford Sound. You can drive the Milford Road yourself if conditions suit, or choose a coach and cruise option if you prefer a more relaxed day.
Allowing two or three nights around Te Anau gives you more flexibility if the weather changes. It also makes the Milford Sound visit feel less rushed.
Days 16–18: Wanaka
After Te Anau or Queenstown, travel toward Wanaka.
Wanaka has a more relaxed feel than Queenstown and is a great place to pause for a few nights. You can walk by the lake, visit cafés, explore viewpoints, restock supplies and enjoy a slower pace.
With four weeks, Wanaka does not need to be just a one-night stop. It is a good place to reset before heading toward the West Coast.
Days 19–22: Haast Pass, Fox Glacier, Franz Josef and the West Coast
From Wanaka, travel over the Haast Pass to the West Coast. This is a beautiful drive, but it is not one to rush.
The West Coast offers rainforest, wild beaches, waterfalls, glaciers and dramatic scenery. Good stops can include Haast, Fox Glacier, Franz Josef, Okarito, Hokitika and Punakaiki.
Weather can affect glacier views and walking plans, so it is useful to have flexibility here. The Coast is often memorable even when the weather is moody.
Days 23–25: Punakaiki, Nelson and Abel Tasman
From Punakaiki or the northern West Coast, continue toward Nelson and Abel Tasman.
This area gives the trip a different feel, with beaches, warmer weather, cafés, coastal walks and a slower holiday pace. Abel Tasman is a good place to spend a few nights if you enjoy walking, kayaking, beaches or simply slowing down.
With only two or three weeks, many travellers skip this area. Four weeks gives you a better chance to include it properly.
Days 26–27: Kaikōura or Hanmer Springs
From Nelson, begin working your way back toward Christchurch.
Kaikōura is a good coastal stop with wildlife, sea views and seafood. Hanmer Springs is another option if you prefer hot pools, forest walks and an inland route.
Choose one rather than trying to squeeze in too much at the end of the trip. The goal is to finish relaxed, not tired.
Day 28: Return to Christchurch
Return the motorhome to our Christchurch base at the agreed time.
It is usually best to stay your final night within easy reach of Christchurch. This gives you time to refuel, empty waste tanks, pack properly and return the motorhome without stress.
If you are flying out after your hire, SpringLight can usually drop you back to Christchurch Airport after return, depending on timing.
Why four weeks works well
Four weeks gives you time to enjoy the South Island as a journey, not just a list of stops.
You can include the main highlights, add Nelson and Abel Tasman, allow more time for weather, stay longer in favourite places and avoid packing up every single morning.
For many travellers, this is where a South Island motorhome trip starts to feel properly relaxed.
If you have even more time, our 6 week South Island motorhome itinerary gives you space to include the deep south, quieter detours and a slower pace through the South Island.
