A three-month New Zealand motorhome trip from Christchurch gives you time to explore properly. Instead of rushing between the main highlights, you can slow down, build in rest days, follow the weather and enjoy the smaller stops that often become the most memorable parts of the journey.
This itinerary is designed for travellers planning an extended New Zealand motorhome hire. It gives you time to explore the South Island in depth, add a meaningful North Island section, and still keep enough flexibility for weather, delays, campground availability and personal pace.
SpringLight Motorhomes is based in Christchurch, making us a great starting point for long New Zealand road trips and relaxed South Island adventures.
Who this three-month itinerary suits
A three-month New Zealand motorhome itinerary suits travellers who want a proper long adventure rather than a standard holiday.
It works well for international visitors, retirees, sabbatical travellers, families taking extended time away, people visiting friends and family around New Zealand, or anyone wanting to explore both islands without rushing.
With three months, the motorhome becomes more than transport. It becomes your temporary home while you experience New Zealand at a slower and more flexible pace.
Why start from Christchurch?
Christchurch is one of the best places to start a longer New Zealand motorhome trip, especially if you want to spend proper time in the South Island before considering the North Island.
From Christchurch, you can head inland toward Lake Tekapo, Lake Pukaki and Mount Cook, south toward Queenstown and Wanaka, west toward Arthur’s Pass and the West Coast, or north toward Kaikōura, Nelson and Abel Tasman.
Starting in Christchurch also makes it easy to build a relaxed South Island loop before deciding when to cross Cook Strait to the North Island.
If you are flying into Christchurch, you can select free Christchurch Airport pickup when booking. We’ll bring you back to our base for your full vehicle handover before you head away.
Month 1: Explore the South Island slowly
The first month is a good time to focus on the central and lower South Island.
After pickup and handover in Christchurch, start gently. Use the first day to collect the motorhome, buy groceries, unpack and stay somewhere easy. A proper handover takes time because you need to understand the vehicle before heading away.
We show you the key systems, including power, water, heating, fridge, gas, toilet, shower, waste water, awning if fitted, and general driving tips.
From Christchurch, a relaxed first section could include Lake Tekapo, Lake Pukaki, Mount Cook, Omarama, Central Otago, Queenstown, Glenorchy, Te Anau, Milford Sound, the Catlins, Invercargill, Dunedin and the Otago Peninsula.
With a three-month hire, you do not need to treat these places as one-night stops. You can wait for clear weather around Mount Cook, spend extra time in Wanaka or Queenstown, allow flexibility for Milford Sound, and include the Catlins or Dunedin without feeling like they are squeezed in.
Suggested Month 1 route
A relaxed first month from Christchurch could look something like this:
Christchurch
Lake Tekapo
Lake Pukaki
Mount Cook / Aoraki
Omarama or Twizel
Central Otago
Queenstown
Glenorchy
Te Anau
Milford Sound
The Catlins
Invercargill or Bluff
Dunedin and the Otago Peninsula
Wanaka or Lake Hawea
This is only a guide. The advantage of a three-month motorhome trip is that you can adjust the route depending on the weather, what you enjoy and how quickly you want to move.
Month 2: West Coast, Nelson, Abel Tasman and ferry planning
The second month is a good time to travel up the West Coast and into the top of the South Island.
From Wanaka or Hawea, travel over the Haast Pass toward the West Coast. This drive is one of the most memorable South Island routes, with rainforest, rivers, waterfalls, wild coastline and mountain scenery.
Good stops may include Haast, Fox Glacier, Franz Josef, Okarito, Hokitika, Greymouth and Punakaiki. With a longer hire, you can slow down and spend more time in the places that suit your travel style.
From the West Coast, continue toward Nelson, Abel Tasman and possibly Golden Bay. This area feels very different from the alpine and West Coast sections, with beaches, warmer weather, coastal walks, kayaking, cafés, markets and a more relaxed holiday pace.
By the end of the second month, you can begin thinking about whether to cross to the North Island or spend more time in the South Island.
Suggested Month 2 route
A relaxed second month could include:
Wanaka or Lake Hawea
Haast Pass
Fox Glacier
Franz Josef
Okarito
Hokitika
Punakaiki
Westport or Murchison
Nelson
Abel Tasman
Golden Bay
Marlborough
Picton
If you plan to continue to the North Island, this is also the stage where ferry planning becomes important.
Ferry planning between the islands
If your three-month New Zealand motorhome itinerary includes both islands, you will need to plan the Cook Strait ferry between Picton and Wellington.
Motorhomes need to be booked correctly for size, and popular sailings can fill during busy travel periods. It is worth booking ahead if you are travelling in peak season or need a specific date.
Avoid making the ferry day too tight. Allow time for driving to Picton, checking in, crossing the strait, and settling in once you arrive in Wellington.
For a relaxed three-month trip, it is usually better to leave some flexibility around the ferry rather than locking every day too tightly.
Month 3: North Island highlights and flexible return planning
The third month can be used for a focused North Island section, or for more South Island time if you prefer not to cross the strait.
If you do travel to the North Island, start with Wellington and then choose a route that suits your interests. You might head toward the Kapiti Coast, Tongariro National Park, Taupō, Rotorua, Hawke’s Bay, Coromandel, Auckland or Northland depending on your timing and return plans.
The North Island has a different feel from the South Island, with geothermal areas, beaches, Māori culture, forests, lakes, vineyards, cities and warmer northern regions.
For a three-month trip, you still do not need to see everything. It is better to choose a route that gives you time to enjoy the places properly rather than turning the final month into a race.
Suggested Month 3 North Island route
A focused North Island section could include:
Wellington
Kapiti Coast or Wairarapa
Tongariro National Park
Lake Taupō
Rotorua
Hawke’s Bay or Tauranga
Coromandel
Auckland region
Optional Northland extension, depending on timing
If your hire returns to Christchurch, remember to allow enough time to travel back south, cross the ferry again and return the motorhome without stress.
If you prefer a South Island-only trip, the third month can be used to slow down even further, revisit favourite places, include more remote areas, or spend longer in regions like Golden Bay, the West Coast, Central Otago, Fiordland or the Catlins.
Why three months works so well
Three months gives you time to travel New Zealand in a way that shorter hires cannot.
You can avoid rushing, stay longer in favourite places, build in rest days, wait for better weather, visit quieter regions and enjoy the freedom of having your accommodation with you.
This length of hire is especially useful for travellers who want to experience both the well-known highlights and the smaller stops between them.
For many people, a three-month motorhome trip becomes less like a holiday and more like a temporary lifestyle.
South Island only, or both islands?
With three months, you have enough time for both options.
A South Island-only trip lets you travel very slowly, spend longer in national parks, explore quieter areas and avoid the cost and planning involved with ferry crossings.
A both-islands trip gives you a broader New Zealand experience, with the contrast between South Island alpine scenery and North Island beaches, geothermal areas, lakes and cultural highlights.
There is no single right answer. The best route depends on your interests, the season, your budget, your return plans and how often you want to move.
Long term hire practical tips
For a three-month motorhome hire, comfort and planning matter.
Before booking, think about how many people are travelling, how much luggage you will have, whether you prefer fixed beds or flexible sleeping spaces, how often you expect to stay off-grid, and whether you need extras such as a bike rack or eBike option.
It is also worth thinking about the season. Summer can be busy in popular areas, while shoulder seasons can be quieter but more changeable. Winter travel can be beautiful, but it requires more care around alpine roads, daylight hours and weather.
For longer hires, availability can be limited because a long booking can reserve a motorhome for a large part of the season. It is worth getting in touch early with your approximate dates, number of travellers and rough route ideas.
Unlimited mileage for long New Zealand trips
All SpringLight hires include unlimited mileage, meaning there is no additional kilometre surcharge for the hire itself.
This is especially helpful on longer New Zealand motorhome trips, where scenic detours, national parks, coastal routes, mountain passes and extra stops are part of the experience.
You still need to allow for Road User Charges, fuel and normal travel costs, but unlimited mileage gives you more freedom when planning a longer route.
